Pre-cleanse.
The standard opening move before a juice cleanse, elimination diet, or supplement-based program.
Booking a colonic at the start of a cleanse or elimination program is one of the most common wellness use cases. The reasoning is simple: starting a cleanse with a cleared colon is more comfortable, reduces the 'die-off' discomfort that many programs produce in the first few days, and gives the client a clearer read on how the program itself is working. This is consumer education on how the session fits into a pre-cleanse routine, not an endorsement of any specific program.
A cleared colon at the start of a cleanse reduces the total load of fermenting matter the program has to process, which is why many clients report fewer headaches, less bloating, and better energy in the first three days of a cleanse that began with a colonic. This is not a scientific claim about 'detoxification' — it is a practical observation about GI comfort. The colonic itself doesn't add anything; it subtracts what was already sitting there.
Most practitioners recommend the pre-cleanse colonic 24 to 48 hours before the cleanse begins, not on the same day. The gap allows the client to rehydrate, eat one or two light, nourishing meals, and begin the cleanse without the post-session fatigue that some people experience. Some cleanse protocols (Ayurvedic panchakarma, some juice cleanse programs) build colonics into the program itself at specific days — follow the program's protocol rather than improvising.
Many programs recommend a second or third colonic during the cleanse, typically on day three, day five, or day seven depending on the program length. These mid-cleanse sessions address the fresh elimination the cleanse itself is producing and are part of why multi-day retreats at wellness centers include two to five colonics in the schedule. For a self-directed home cleanse, one pre-cleanse and one post-cleanse session is a typical cadence.
Many first-time clients feel lighter, less bloated, and slightly fatigued for 12 to 24 hours after the session. This is normal and not a sign of 'detoxification reactions' — it is the body adjusting to reduced fermentation volume. Hydrating aggressively, eating light meals (bone broth, steamed vegetables, rice), and moving gently are the standard post-session recommendations for a pre-cleanse context.
It is not a 'reset button' that neutralizes dietary damage; it is not a substitute for the cleanse itself; it is not a standalone treatment. It is a practical opening move that makes the cleanse more comfortable. Practitioners who sell colonics as 'the cleanse' or as a substitute for dietary work are overstating the modality.
Do you have experience prepping clients for juice cleanses, elimination diets, or specific programs? What do you recommend for timing relative to the cleanse start? Do you discuss post-session nutrition, or leave that to the cleanse program? Do you have any contraindications for clients going into a cleanse that I should know about?
